You can pause, cancel, or make changes (i.e. from annual to monthly/monthly to annual) to your membership by giving a minimum of more than 30 days notice in writing/email. If you give notice within the 30 day window, you will be charged the full amount for your billing cycle.

As we are a tight-knit Collective, ideally, if you could please give 60-90 days notice before any changes/pauses/cancellation, it will help our Collective stay stable and able to plan ahead to invest in things that will offer maximum value to members.

All membership fees, including processing fee/admin fees (and any taxes, if applicable) are included in the membership cost.

You will be given priority notice to Social events, Trainings - some of these will be free - and some will be at a separate charge. When possible, we will do our best to offer special rates or discounts to RTC members on RTC sponsored events or trainings, as well as those members who are facing financial difficulties such as students or recent graduates.

• Self-Employed / Private Practice: Membership dues, professional development subscriptions, and practice management resources are deductible business expenses on your T2125 (Statement of Business or Professional Activities) return.

• Employed Counsellors: If required for your employment or professional growth, dues may be eligible as a deductible professional fee on your personal return (Line 21200) or fully reimbursable by your employer.

Do I charge GST/HST on psychotherapy or counselling therapy sessions?

No. As of June 20, 2024, psychotherapy and counselling therapy services provided by qualified, regulated practitioners are exempt from GST/HST across Canada under the Excise Tax Act (CRA Memorandum 25-3). You do not add GST/HST to your client session fees.

Do I charge GST/HST on clinical supervision?

No, provided it is for direct clinical care. Clinical supervision required for regulatory college licensing, maintaining professional practice standards, or providing direct clinical oversight for patient care is exempt from GST/HST.

Note: Business coaching, practice-building mentorship, or administrative consulting sold to therapists remains fully taxable (GST/HST applies).

Can clients or supervisees claim these expenses on their taxes?

• Psychotherapy Clients: Clients can claim eligible medical therapy fees under the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) on line 33099 of their personal tax return, provided the therapist is a licensed/registered practitioner in their jurisdiction.

• Supervisees / Associate Therapists: Supervisees who pay for required clinical supervision can claim the expense as a tax-deductible professional development / clinical oversight cost on Line 8860 / 9270 of their T2125 (Statement of Business or Professional Activities).

Can I claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) on expenses for my therapy practice?

Because psychotherapy and clinical supervision are GST/HST-exempt supplies (rather than zero-rated supplies), you cannot claim ITCs to recover the GST/HST paid on business expenses directly related to those services. Instead, you include the tax paid as part of the total deductible business expense on your T2125 return.

Both group and individual supervision count towards licensing, association, and university requirements, but they are governed by specific caps and rules.

1. Registration & Licensing Hours (CRPO, CCPA, BCACC, etc.)

Regulatory bodies and professional associations recognize both formats, but they enforce format ratios to ensure practitioners receive enough 1-on-1 focus:

• Individual / Dyadic Supervision (1:1 or 1:2 ratio):

  • Unrestricted. All licensing bodies count 100% of these hours toward total clinical supervision requirements.

• Group Supervision (3+ supervisees):

  • Countable, but subject to a 50% maximum cap. For example, the CRPO requires that at least 50% of a practitioner's required supervision hours be individual/dyadic; up to 50% can be acquired in group settings.

  • Group Size Limits: Most regulatory bodies mandate a maximum limit (typically 6 to 8 participants) for group supervision hours to remain valid.

2. University / Graduate Practicum Requirements

For master’s programs (e.g., Yorkville, University of Toronto, MACP, etc.):

• Practicum Log Split: Practicum courses almost always require a mixture of both formats. For example, a university may require 1 hour of individual supervision for every 10–20 direct client contact hours, with group supervision assigned as a separate weekly requirement.

• Hour Attribution: In university practicums, time spent in group supervision counts hour-for-hour (e.g., a 2-hour group equals 2 hours of group supervision), but it cannot replace the minimum required individual supervision hours with your site supervisor.

3. Continuing Education Credits (CECs / CEs)

Whether receiving or providing supervision counts for Continuing Education depends on the association:

• As a Supervisee (Receiving Supervision):

  • Ongoing clinical supervision typically counts toward professional development requirements for certified or licensed members (e.g., maintaining CCPA Canadian Certified Counsellor status or BCACC RCC maintenance).

  • Both individual and group clinical supervision hours can generally be logged under self-directed or formal professional activity categories.

• As a Supervisor (Providing Supervision):

  • Formal courses on how to provide group or individual clinical supervision count as formal CECs.

  • The actual hours spent delivering supervision can often be logged under professional contribution/mentorship credits, subject to annual maximum limits.
